For 20 years, the Arlington area of Jacksonville was one of the fastest growing areas in Duval County. Today, there's a renewed interest in some of the area's older homes - especially those on waterfront properties. Arlington is located west of the Regency Square shopping area and north of Beach Boulevard. With the opening of the Matthews Bridge in 1953, the area experienced a fast-pace of growth - mushrooming far beyond its original boundaries. Some Arlington homes date back to the early 1900's, with nearly a quarter of all homes valued from $100,000 to $250,000. Schools and Buying in Arlington The area has become a hot spot for young up-and-comers. There are eight elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school located in the area. Jacksonville University and Jones College offer higher education choices, and with the opening of State Highway 9A there's also easy access to the University of North Florida and two Florida Community College in Jacksonville (FCCJ) locations. Historic Features in Arlington A trip to Fort Caroline brings a glimpse of old Florida. The area is less than 15 miles east of downtown Jacksonville on the southern shore of the St. Johns River. The area offers with breathtaking views of rolling terrain and stately oaks. Leisure time in Fort Caroline includes taking advantage of their natural surroundings by hiking, exploring, kayaking and fishing - enjoying a protected nature preserve that's practically in their backyard. The view from St. Johns Bluff offers a vista of the St. Johns River, once known as the River of May. Although housing development continues to soar, hundreds of acres in Fort Caroline remain untouched because of their historic standing. Homes in Fort Caroline run the gamut from modest affordable homes starting in the mid-$80,000's to half-million-dollar-and-up retreats along the river. For home buyers in search of country club living, there's Hidden Hills - a private club founded in 1965 that offers golf, tennis and more. The newest development is in East Arlington, or as many are now renaming it - the West Beaches. It is a fast growing area for new homes in Jacksonville. From Atlantic Boulevard on the north, to Butler Boulevard on the south, and the Intracoastal Waterway as its eastern boundary, there is plenty of raw land available for development. The area also features numerous newer developments and exclusive planned communities such as Queens Harbour Yacht and Country Club, Windsor Park Golf Club and the Jacksonville Country Club, as well as new office building developments near and around the Mayo Clinic on San Pablo Road. The retirement community of Cypress Village is located adjacent to Mayo Clinic.
